New Book Focuses on Draft Resisters
26 Oct 2007
The author of a ground-breaking book on the World War II Nisei draft resistance will speak on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2:30 p.m. at the Union Bank of California Hospitality Room, located in San Francisco Japantown’s Miyako Mall (enter from Peace Plaza on Post and Buchanan).
Professor Yukio Morita of Kanazawa University will discuss his new Japanese-language book, Amerika Nikkei Nisei no Chouhei Kihi (American Nikkei Nisei Draft Resistance).
He will be joined by Nisei draft resisters Mits Koshiyama and Ken Yoshida. The moderator will be Kenji Taguma, Nichi Bei Times English editor.
“They refused to fight for their country while their families were imprisoned in concentration camps during World War II,” said an event organizer. “Prosecuted by the government as criminals and ostracized as traitors by Japanese American leaders and veterans, these principled protesters served prison terms and were written out of the popular history of Japanese America for the next 50 years.”
Japanese-English translation will be provided. Copies of the book will be available.
The event is sponsored by the Japanese American National Library, Nichi Bei Times, and Hokubei Mainichi.
