JP Trading is presenting “Hiroshige: The 53 Stations on the Tokaido” through Nov. 11 at the old Mikado space (across from May’s Coffee Shop) in the Kintetsu Building of the Japan Center in San Francisco (entrance on Post and Buchanan). Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The famed woodblock prints depict a journey from Tokyo to Kyoto along the Tokaido road. The exhibit, organized by the Tokyo Traditional Woodblock Prints Association, includes photos of the 53 stations as they appear today.
The opening night celebration on Oct. 12 featured a demonstration by woodblock printer Shozaburo Horikawa, who demonstrated the traditional method of making the prints, using special Japanese cherry wood blocks and pigments as close as possible to the ones used in the Edo period to recreate “Yui Station.”
