Donna Uchizono to Teach Master Class
18 Oct 2007
A master class for intermediate and advanced dancers with Donna Uchizono will be held on Friday, Oct. 19, from 12 to 2 p.m. at ODC Dance Commons, 351 Shotwell St., San Francisco.
“Donna Uchizono’s striking visual worlds expose the extraordinary in the ordinary, through an amalgam of meticulously structured, visceral movement and riveting imagery,” said an ODC spokesperson. “Uchizono and members of Donna Uchizono Company will teach sections from ‘Thin Air,’ a collaboration with dancers Hristoula Harakas, Antonio Ramos and Julie Alexander; composer Fred Frith; video artist Michael Casselli; and lighting designer Jane Shaw, which makes its West Coast premiere at ODC this weekend.
“ ‘Thin Air’ explores how our sense of reality is both shaped and obscured by our perceptions, emphasizing the intimate emotional power of ‘real’ physical contact in a landscape that is both true and virtual.”
The cost is $15. Pre-registration is required. For more information, call (415) 863-9830, ext. 201.
Hailed by Ms. Magazine’s end-of-the-century issue as “a choreographer making great leaps forward into the 21st century,” Uchizono has been recognized by many grants and awards, most recently with a 2005 Alpert Award in dance. In 2002, she received a New York Dance and Performance Award (“Bessie”) for her piece “Low.” She recently created a new work for Mikhail Baryshnikov, commissioned by the Baryshnikov Dance Foundation.
The New York-based Donna Uchizono Company, established in 1990, has been presented throughout the U.S., Europe and South America.
“Thin Air” will be performed Thursday to Saturday, Oct. 18-20, at 8 p.m. at ODC Theater, 3153 17th St. at Shotwell. Tickets are $25 general, $20 in advance, $18 for seniors, students and children 12 and under. A free reception will follow each performance.
