OAKLAND — A Sogetsu ikebana flower show will be on view in the gardens of the Oakland Museum of California, 1000 Oak St. at 10th Street, on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 14, from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

Dramatic floral designs and sculptural displays using natural and unconventional materials will transform the museum’s public areas this weekend. Large bamboo installations and site-specific works by the Soho Study Group honor the 80th anniversary of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana.

The Soho Study Group, founded in 1997 by master ikebana teacher Soho Sakai, continues the contemporary, innovative principles of the Sogetsu School.

Free demonstrations will be given in the James Moore Theatre on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. by Gail Emmons and Soho Sakai, respectively. Both are riji (the highest teaching rank) of the Sogetsu School.

There will be educational displays and informal demonstrations in the museum cafe and adjacent patio areas during the afternoon.

No museum admission is required. For more information, call call (510) 238-2200 or visit www.museumca.org.
